Fixing Problems with Windows Start-up
Windows startup problems can interfere with the normal loading and
initializing of your computer’s operating system, and can prevent you
from using your computer normally. Sometimes small glitches in the
operating system launching sequence can be resolved with a quick reboot,
but sometimes more advanced troubleshooting steps are needed.
For users running Windows Vista, there is a new tool available for
troubleshooting startup errors called Startup Repair that is designed to
resolve missing or corrupted system file errors that are impeding your
system. This tool scans your entire system and attempts to fix any
problems it finds so that your operating system can launch normally.
If your computer was preinstalled with Vista and you were not provided
an installation disk, then you can run the Startup Repair tool this way:
-
Make sure that there aren’t any disks in any computer drives
-
Reboot your computer
-
As your computer boots up, start pressing the F8 key to enter the
Advanced Options menu
-
Use your keyboard arrow keys to choose Repair Your Computer, then
press Enter
-
Choose your keyboard format, then click Next
-
Choose your user name and password, then OK
-
Now, from the System Recovery Options menu, select Startup Repair,
follow any instructions offered until the scan is complete
If you have an installation disk for Vista, follow these steps:
-
Put the disk in the drive and reboot your computer
-
If you are asked, choose to start Windows from the disk
-
Choose your language, then click Next
-
Choose Repair Your Computer
-
Make sure your operating system is selected, then click Next
-
From the System Recovery Options, choose Startup Repair, complete
any instructions offered until the scan is finished
If you aren’t receiving any error messages but your computer is
unresponsive when you try to launch Windows and you have already
performed an operating system scan, you might also want to check that
there aren’t any problems with your hardware. Windows offers a CHKDSK
utility to scan the hard drive for issues.
-
Right click the Start button, and choose Explore
-
From the list on the left side of the window, right click Local Disk
C:, then choose Properties
-
Select the Tools tab, then click the Check Now button under
Error-Checking
-
If asked for permission by User Account Control, click Continue
-
Make sure both boxes are checked to fix file system errors and
attempt recovery of bad sectors, then click Start
-
A popup will appear telling you that the disk is in use and the scan
can’t run – choose the Schedule Disk Check option
-
Turn your computer off – not just a reboot – and then power back up,
when it starts up the disk check will launch
-
Let the process run until complete
On the same window as above, under the Tools tab, there is an option to
defragment your hard disk. It is a good idea to run this scan as well to
remove unnecessary bits of data that might be slowing your computer
functions.
